Set in the Congo Basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, primatologist Magdalena Bermejo follows a family of Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) over the course of five years, studying the habituation process. Along with her husband, cinematographer German Illera, Bermejo documents the daily lives of the gorillas, capturing their highly selective feeding habits, parenting behavior, social grooming, nesting, and playing. Inspired by Jane Goodall, Bermejo began researching chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), but she soon became enamored of gorillas. The researchers track the family of gorillas through the forests of the Congo Basin, finally winning the trust of Apollo, the adult male silverback. Throughout these five years, Bermejo and Illera work alongside native Congolese of the region, who have overcome fears of gorillas and have now set up a protection program in their region. With the videos taken by Illera, the native group hopes to make its forest home into a governmentally protected gorilla sanctuary.
